BMW S55 Tuning & Upgrades

Few modern engines respond to tuning like the S55. A flash transforms it, and the proven bolt-ons stack up fast. But there's a golden rule unique to this engine — pin the crank hub before you make real power — and a sensible order to spend in. Here's the path with proven, popular parts.

Pin the crank hub before you tune

The single most important thing on a tuned S55: the crank hub is a friction fit that can slip under added torque, with serious consequences. Pin it before adding meaningful power — pin first, then tune. It's not optional insurance on this engine. Read the full crank hub guide before you start.

Stage 1: The Foundation

The flash plus the must-do hardware every tuned S55 needs.

bootmod3 Flash Tune SoftwareBiggest gain
bootmod3 (BM3) is the most popular S55 flash platform — a huge, instant power and torque jump from software alone, with off-the-shelf and custom maps. The foundation of nearly every S55 build.

Stage 2: Breathing & Cooling

Help the turbos move more air, in and out, and keep temps down.

CTS 3″ Downpipes w/ High-Flow Cats CTS TurboBig gain
3-inch stainless downpipes with high-flow cats free up the exhaust, add real power with a tune, and wake up the sound — a core Stage 2 item (check local emissions law).

Wagner Tuning Intercooler Kit Wagner TuningSupporting
A larger intercooler keeps charge temps down so the car holds power on repeat pulls and track sessions — essential once boost climbs. A key supporting mod for consistent gains.

Legality & warranty

Tuning and decat/downpipe parts may not be road-legal in your area and can affect emissions compliance and warranty. Check local law, and remember a tune voids or complicates BMW warranty coverage. Tune with a reputable shop on a car that's mechanically sorted.

The Smart Order to Spend

Do it in this sequence and you'll spend well: solve the crank hub (the Insane Performance 4-pin), add the ECS oil filter cap, then a bootmod3 flash — that's the transformative foundation. Build Stage 2 with CTS downpipes, a Wagner intercooler and an intake; sharpen the chassis with KW or Bilstein coilovers (plus the EDC top mounts and Turner arms); and make sure the brakes and tyres can use the power. The Akrapovič or your exhaust of choice is the finishing flourish. Big-power builds (upgraded turbos, fuelling) come after all of the above is solid.

FAQ

What's the first thing I should do to an S55?

Solve the crank hub with something like the Insane Performance 4-pin hub, add an upgraded oil filter cap, then a flash tune like bootmod3. The hub protects the engine from the added torque, and the flash delivers the big power gain.

Is bootmod3 the best tune?

It's the most popular S55 flash platform and a proven choice, with both off-the-shelf and custom maps. The "best" is whatever a reputable tuner supports well for your goals and supporting mods.

Do I really need to address the crank hub?

On a tuned S55, treat it as essential — the friction-fit hub can slip under the extra torque, with serious consequences. Pin it before you add meaningful power. See our crank hub guide.

Which exhaust should I choose?

The Akrapovič titanium slip-on is the most coveted for sound and weight; the genuine M Performance exhaust suits an OEM look; Turner's valved catback and AWE's SwitchPath give adjustable volume for less. Pick on budget and how loud you want it.

KW V3 or Bilstein PSS10?

Both are excellent. The KW V3 offers independent rebound and compression adjustment and is the benchmark; the Bilstein PSS10 is a proven, road-friendly 10-way system. On an EDC car you'll also want the correct 5-bolt top mounts.

The Bottom Line

The S55 is a tuner's dream — but you earn the power by doing it right. Solve the crank hub, add the oil filter cap, then flash with bootmod3; build out with CTS downpipes, a Wagner intercooler and an intake; sharpen with KW or Bilstein coilovers; and finish with an Akrapovič. Support the power with brakes and tyres, mind the legality, and tune with a reputable shop. Read the crank hub guide first, and head back to the F80 hub.
