BMW E92 Spark Plug Replacement (N52, N54, N55)

Coil-on-plug ignition makes this a clean hour's work on any E92 six. The catch is that the plug and interval differ by engine — and a tuned N54 or N55 wants a colder plug, gapped tighter, to stop misfires under boost. Here's how to do it right for your engine.

All three E92 sixes run one ignition coil per cylinder, each sitting directly on its spark plug — six coils, six plugs, no leads. The job is the same across the engines; what changes is which plug, what gap, and how often. The NA N52 is the easygoing one; the direct-injection turbos run hotter and harder on plugs, especially when tuned.

Step-by-Step

Cool Down & Uncover

Work on a cool engine to protect the threads and your hands. Remove the plastic engine cover to expose the row of coils on top of the head.

Disconnect & Remove the Coils

Release each coil's wiring connector (lift the wire clip and pull), free any retaining clip, then pull each coil straight up off its plug. They lift out by hand — work one cylinder at a time.

Remove the Old Plugs

Drop the spark-plug socket on its extension down each plug well and turn counter-clockwise. The rubber insert grips the plug so it lifts out cleanly. Note how the old plugs look — even, tan coloring is healthy; a fouled, sooty plug on a turbo hints at a too-hot heat range or a rich condition.

Check the Gap (by Engine)

Handle new plugs by the body, never the electrode. On a stock car, leave the factory gap alone. On a tuned N54/N55, confirm the gap against your tuner's spec — typically tightened (around 0.022") with a colder plug to prevent misfires under boost.

Install the New Plugs

Thread each plug in by hand first to avoid cross-threading the aluminum head, then torque to spec with the wrench. Snug and correct — never gorilla-tight.

Refit the Coils

Push each coil straight down onto its plug until seated, reconnect the wiring connector until it clicks, and refit any clip. If you're replacing coils, fit the new ones now.

Reassemble & Clear Codes

Refit the engine cover, start up and confirm a smooth idle. Clear any stored misfire codes with a scan tool and take a short drive to make sure the check-engine light stays off.

Hand-thread the plugs — protect the alloy head

The E92's cylinder head is aluminum and the threads strip easily. Always start each plug by hand, only reaching for the ratchet once it turns freely, then torque to spec. A cross-threaded plug is an expensive mistake on a job this simple.

Tip Because the N54 and N55 are direct-injection, they also build up carbon on the intake valves over time — plugs cure misfires, but a sluggish, carboned engine wants walnut blasting too (a companion guide is coming). And if you're chasing a single misfire, swap that coil to a neighboring cylinder to confirm whether the coil or the plug is at fault.

How often should I change the plugs?

It depends on the engine. The NA N52 can go roughly 45,000–60,000 miles; the turbo N54 and N55 are harder on plugs at around 30,000–45,000, and a tuned car shorter still — many tuned owners change every 15,000–20,000 miles.

Do tuned turbos need different spark plugs?

Usually, yes. A tuned N54/N55 running more boost benefits from a one-step-colder plug gapped tighter (often around 0.022") to prevent the spark from blowing out under cylinder pressure. Follow your tuner's recommendation for heat range and gap.

Should I gap the new plugs?

On a stock car, leave the factory gap alone — modern plugs come pre-gapped. On a tuned turbo, check and set the gap carefully to your tuner's spec, handling the plug by the body so you don't damage the electrode.

Should I replace the coils too?

If you're chasing misfires or the coils are original and high-mileage, replacing them with the plugs makes sense. Otherwise, plugs alone are fine — swap a suspect coil to a neighboring cylinder to confirm which part is at fault.

What about carbon buildup?

The N54 and N55 are direct-injection, so carbon collects on the intake valves over time. Fresh plugs cure ignition misfires, but if the engine feels sluggish, walnut blasting the valves is the companion job — separate from this one.

That's a fresh set of plugs in about an hour — easy once you've matched the right plug, gap and interval to your engine. Stock N52: factory plugs, long interval. Tuned N54/N55: a colder plug gapped tighter, changed more often. Hand-thread to protect the head, reset and you're set. Feed it the right oil, and head back to the E92 hub for the rest.
