Is the 328i too slow?

Not slow, just unhurried by modern turbo standards. The N52 is smooth and willing, and plenty quick for daily enjoyment — you trade outright pace for reliability and lower running costs. If straight-line speed is the priority, that's what the 335i is for.

N54 or N55 for the 335i?

Was the E92 available with a manual?

Yes — both the 328i and 335i coupe were offered with a manual as well as an automatic. A clean manual car is especially sought-after; check the clutch bite and shifter feel on the drive.
